親愛なる 渡辺会長、
役員の皆様
そして日本アイスランド協会の会員の皆様とその他のゲストの皆様、
今晩、皆様方にご挨拶できることは大変喜ばしく光栄なことです。私が駐日アイスランド大使としての任務についてから18ヶ月が経ちました。この間は私と私の家族にとって学ぶことの連続であり、そして非常に楽しい期間でした。
本年はアイスランドと日本が国交樹立50周年を祝うという、両国の関係において節目となる年です。この50年の間、両国の関係は友好的なものであり、年月を経るとともにより結びつきが強まってきました。
もちろん人口１億２千7百万人の国と30万人の国との関係においてはある程度の不均衡があります。私たちの関係の上で調和を保っていくためには、相互理解とお互いの文化に対する意識を高めていくように努力していくことが重要となります。私はこの点において、特にこの20年ほどの間に着実な進展があったと確信しています。ここ東京における大使館の開設は、両国の関係を深める上でも重要な一歩だったのです。
また、アイスランドの国の機関を代表する者として、日本アイスランド協会が、両国の関係において重要な貢献をしてきてくださったことを、非常に嬉しく思っております。本年は貴団体にとっても、重要な年であります。日本アイスランド協会が、我が国のヴィグデイス・フィンボガドッテイル前大統領の臨席の下で設立されてから経ちます。設立当初から、日本アイスランド協会は両国間の関係、特に文化面での交流を深めるという重要な役割を担ってきました。
日本アイスランド協会とお付き合いできることは光栄なことであり、今後より連携を深めていくことを楽しみにしております。この6月に日本アイスランド協会が、ギター・イスランシオという非常に人気のある音楽家たちを招聘するは素晴らしいことです。もちろん私たちお互いの努力と協力が必要となるような企画が今後も出てくることと思います。
人口30万人という小さな国が、世界でも最も大きな国に数えられるこの日本で注目を集めていくことは決して容易なことではありません。しかし日本アイスランド協会の皆様のような真の友人がいるかぎり、私は両国の将来の関係について非常に楽観的に見ております。両国間の関係が良好で繁栄してゆく基盤は、人と人との交流によって築かれていくものです。ですから私は今後の私たちの実りある共同作業を楽しみにしているのです。
今晩、私たちにアイスランドを思い起こさせるようなものは多くありませんが、少なくともアイスランドのラム肉を賞味していただくことができますし、ウール製品や今月始めに東京で開催されたアイスランド映画祭の記念品なども展示されます。
渡辺会長、そして脇田様、そしてここにお集まりの皆様全員のご多幸とご清栄をお祈りし、結びとさせていただきます。

Dear Chairman Mr. Watanabe,
Member of the board
Members of the Japan -Iceland Society and other guests,
It is both a great pleasure and honour to address you here
tonight. The 18 months have now passed since I took up my duties
as the Ambassador of Iceland to Japan have been a period of
intensive learning and great “enjoyment” for me and my family.
This year is a special milestone in the relations between Iceland
and Japan as we will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the
diplomatic relations between Iceland and Japan. During all
these years the relations between our countries have been friendly
and growing stronger with passing time.
Of course it is always a certain imbalance in the relations
of a country with 127 million inhabitants and a country with
300 thousand inhabitants. To keep these relations harmonious
it is important to keep working for increased mutual understanding
and cultural awareness among our peoples. I am convinced that
we have made good progress in that regard, in particular over
the past two decades or so. The establishment of the Embassy
here in Tokyo was an important step to deepen our relations.
I am also more than pleased to recognize on behalf of my authorities
the important contribution that the Japan - Iceland Society
has given to the relations between Iceland and Japan. This
year is also a important year for this fine organization as
15 years have passed since this society was established with
the attendance of our then President, Ms Vigdis Finnbogadottir.
Since then the Japan Iceland Society has played an important
role in strengthening the relations between Iceland and Japan,
in particular in the cultural field.
I am honoured to be associated with the Iceland-Japan Society
and look forward to much closer cooperation in the years
to come. I commend the Society for bringing very popular
musicians,
Guitar Islancio to Japan in June, a project we will gladly
support. And surely we will find other project that will
require our common effort and cooperation.
It will never be easy for a small nation of 300 thousand
people keep up a strong profile here in one of the biggest
states
of the world, but with true friends like the Iceland-Japan
Society helping us I am very optimistic our future relations.
The best foundations for good and prosperous relations between
states are formed through people to people contacts. Therefore
I look forward to fruitful co-operation between us in the
years to come.
Tonight we do not have much to remind us of Iceland here,
but at least you can have a taste of our Icelandic lamb and
also
there are wool products are displayed and some memorabilia
from the Iceland Film Festival that was held here in Tokyo
earlier this month.
Chairman Mr. Watanabe, Mr. Wakita, I conclude by wishing
you and all guests present here tonight all happiness and
prosperity
